The quick answer
Rise Gardens suits growers who prefer a shelf-style layout and a choice of levels. Gardyn suits those who prefer an upright garden and optional camera-assisted guidance. Neither removes hands-on plant care. Compare the exact model, included equipment, consumables and access for cleaning—not just the advertised plant count.
Two approaches to an indoor garden
Both grow plants without soil using water, nutrients and built-in lighting. The practical difference is how that garden fits your room and routine: a shelf-style arrangement or an upright growing layout.
Start with what you will harvest, where you will place it and how you will reach every plant. Our competitor comparison hub puts those choices in context.

What the systems do for you
Scheduled lighting and water delivery support the growing cycle. They do not replace checking plants, adding supplies or cleaning. The illustration shows the general principle; each product routes water differently.
The growing loop, made simple
Water, nutrients and light support the plants.
Automation helps with routine delivery.
You still refill, feed, prune and clean.
Water is delivered from the reservoir to the growing sites.
Roots receive moisture and nutrients. The route depends on the system.
Grow lights provide light on a schedule. Check canopy coverage.
Water returns to the reservoir; refill and clean as directed.
Five things to compare
Look beyond the product silhouette. These parts shape daily use and long-term upkeep.
Reservoir
Can you refill, drain and clean it without moving a full garden?
Water pump
Check access, replacement availability and the cleaning routine.
Growing layout
Compare shelf levels with an upright layout and room for mature leaves.
Grow sites
Check supplied holders, media and the cost of starting another crop.
Lighting
Check coverage, schedules and the effect of bright light in your room.
What can you grow?
Choose crops you cook with and leave space for them to mature. Start with a modest planting rather than filling every site.

Leafy greens
Lettuce and other compact greens are a practical starting point.

Fresh herbs
Harvest regularly and keep vigorous herbs from shading neighbors.

Fruiting crops
Choose compact varieties; check support, light and pollination needs.

Young plants
Watch early growth and thin seedlings before crowding develops.
Daily & weekly care
Use the selected model’s instructions to set your routine.
Check water
Refill as directed and inspect plants for wilting or leaks.
Feed and monitor
Add nutrients as instructed; log care rather than guessing.
Manage the canopy
Check light exposure, prune, harvest and give leaves room.
Clean the system
Follow the maker’s cleaning schedule and inspect roots and flow.
Benefits and trade-offs
What you gain

- Scheduled water and lighting
- A visible, hands-on growing routine
What to plan for
- Upfront equipment and ongoing supplies
- Bright lights and room to work
- Regular plant care and cleaning
- Optional services and app permissions
Compare total ownership cost: equipment + delivery + supplies + energy + optional services + replacement parts. Avoid counting included supplies twice.
Common questions
Make the comparison around the way you want to grow.
Which one is better for a small home?
Measure the complete growing area, not only the base. Allow room for foliage, lights, harvesting and reservoir access. Compare the exact model you plan to buy; a compact footprint can still need substantial vertical and working clearance.
Do I need a subscription?
Gardyn says membership is optional: basic light and watering schedules remain available without it, while membership adds services such as Kelby guidance and plant credits. Rise also offers purchases without membership. Check the current inclusions, trial renewal and cancellation terms before checkout.
Can I use my own seeds?
Both brands offer a route for your own seeds: Rise Seedless Pods and Gardyn seedless yCubes. Use compatible media and suitable varieties. Seed flexibility does not mean every crop fits the available light, height or root space.
How many plants can I grow?
Gardyn Home 4 is listed with 30 plant sites. Rise capacity depends on the model, number of levels and tray configuration; expanded site counts may require additional parts. A site count is not a guarantee of mature crop capacity or harvest weight.
Which garden costs less to own?
Build a like-for-like total using the selected configuration, shipping, taxes, seeds or pods, nutrients, optional membership, electricity and replacement parts. Separate included supplies from later purchases. Current offers vary, so there is no fixed two-year winner in this guide.
How much care and data access should I expect?
Both still need refilling, feeding, pruning, harvesting and cleaning. Read each system’s care instructions. Gardyn Home 4 has plant-facing cameras that can be disabled, which limits image-based guidance. Review current app permissions and privacy terms; automation does not mean unattended growing.
